1. Please share with us briefly about your career journey in Canada.

I’ve worked in the financial industry for nearly 15 years with one of Canada’s Big Five banks since graduating from UBC Vancouver. Throughout my career, I’ve gained experience across various functions, including asset management, strategic analysis & planning, and risk management. Currently, I work in Corporate Banking, managing a diverse portfolio of institutional trading credit clients and underwriting various capital markets products, including derivatives, margin financing, and securities finance.

2. What inspired you to join and take on a leadership role at Manyatta Network, and how has this shaped your career?

I was drawn to Manyatta’s vision of building a strong, vibrant Pan-African professional community in Toronto, Montreal, and Ottawa- a space where members support one another, foster meaningful connections, and celebrate professional achievements. Being part of a team dedicated to creating a brand that evokes belonging, empowerment, and pride has been incredibly rewarding.

The relationships I’ve built through Manyatta have provided me with a diverse and supportive network of mentors, peers, and friends. These connections have not only enriched my career but have also given me the confidence to navigate challenges, seek guidance, and leverage opportunities.

3. How does Manyatta Network help immigrant professionals build meaningful connections and navigate the Canadian job market?

Manyatta creates a welcoming and culturally familiar space for immigrant professionals, allowing them to build authentic, lasting connections that often turn into friendships, mentorships, and career opportunities. By focusing on the African Diaspora, Manyatta helps members integrate quickly into the professional landscape while fostering a strong sense of community.

Additionally, Manyatta collaborates with organizations like TRIEC and CUSO to support immigrants in navigating the Canadian job market. This includes providing networking opportunities, referrals, resume guidance, and interview preparation, ensuring professionals are well-positioned for success.

4. What are some of the most effective networking strategies that have been particularly effective for immigrant professionals in advancing their careers?

  • Build Meaningful Relationships: True networking goes beyond meeting people-  it’s about nurturing relationships through consistent engagement and mutual support.
  • Find the “Magic Zone”: The most effective connections exist between friendship and professional networking; people in this space are more likely to support, mentor, and refer you.
  • Engage with Your Network: Stay in touch, offer help when possible, and participate in discussions. Networking is a two-way street.
  • Leverage Professional Networks: Platforms like Manyatta, CAUFP, and Hip Haus provide spaces for professionals to exchange knowledge, discuss business opportunities, and advance careers.

5. Can you share a success story of an immigrant professional who leveraged Manyatta Network to grow their career and achieve success?

Manyatta has helped numerous professionals break into competitive industries like finance and consulting. A standout case is a young immigrant struggling to land his first job in Toronto. Initially pursuing marketing courses in hopes of entering finance, he connected with Manyatta through a member.

Through strategic networking and career guidance, we helped him pivot to finance-related studies, including the Canadian Securities Course (CSC). Within seven months, he secured an internship at a small asset management firm. Today, he works at one of Canada’s Big Five banks as a financial advisor- a testament to the power of focused career planning and networking.

6. What role do employers play in fostering inclusive networking opportunities for immigrant professionals, and what best practices should they adopt?

Many employers partner with organizations like TRIEC and Manyatta to create networking opportunities that support immigrant professionals. Banks, for example, leverage cultural affinity networks (e.g., Black and Asian Affinity Networks) to connect employees with mentorship programs, career seminars, and volunteering initiatives that ease the transition for newcomers.

Employers can do more by hosting targeted networking and recruitment events for immigrants as part of their talent acquisition strategy, ensuring top talent is recognized and integrated into the workforce.

7. What advice would you give to immigrant professionals looking to establish strong professional relationships and unlock opportunities for career growth?

  • Be Proactive in Networking: Attend industry events, introduce yourself, and stay visible in professional circles.
  • Leverage LinkedIn: Don’t hesitate to send cold messages to professionals in your field; persistence is key.
  • Schedule Coffee Chats: Meeting people one-on-one helps build stronger, more personal connections.
  • Join Networking Organizations: Connect with groups like Manyatta, TRIEC PINs Associations, CAUFP, Hip Haus. Active participation fosters familiarity and opens doors to opportunities.
